111. MILLER, Joaquin [Cincinnatus Hiner]. '49 The Gold-Seeker of the Sierras. By Joaquin Miller Author of “Memorie and Time,” “Songs of the Sierras,” etc. New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1884. [114-115 (ads)], 148, 116-125 (ads) pp. 8vo, original tan decorated paper wrappers printed in red and black. Exceptionally fine. Preserved in a green cloth slipcase with gilt-lettered tan leather label and matching chemise.

     First edition. No. 123 of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Library series, greatly expanded from the first appearance in the Overland Monthly. BAL 13799 (paper issue, with priority over cloth). Baird-Greenwood 1760. Cowan I, p. 429. Howell, California 50:1178. Norris 2484: “Very rare.” Wright III:3740. Miller states in the preface that General Sutter first suggested that Miller write this sentimental novel about the first California gold miners. ($150-300)
