Very Rare Coahuilatecan Newspaper
39. COAHUILA Y TEJAS. Gaceta del Gobierno Departamental de Coahuila. Tomo 1o. Sabado 24 de Marza de 1838. No. 10. [at end]: Leona Vicario 1838 Impresa por J. S. Fragosa en la Imprenta del Gobierno. [Saltillo, March 4, 1838]. 4 pp., on laid watermarked paper, masthead with woodcut of eagle. Folio (32 x 21.5 cm). Except for one small fox-mark, very fine. Very rare Borderlands quasi-official newspaper. First edition. Charno, p. 295 (no clue as to issue dates, and locating only a single issue on microfilm, in the Bancroft Library, March 17, 1838). Although the first half of this issue is taken up with the December 1836 treaty between Mexico and Spain, page 3 contains an accounting summary of the state of Coahuila y Tejas, among which are expenses for the seven presidial companies who occupy both Coahuila and Texas, the Army of the North, and the extraordinary expenses for the Texas War. Despite the fact that Texas had been basically independent for about two years, this accounting reflects continued Mexican desires to recover the territory. ($300-600) |
