AUCTION 21

October 26, 2007

Separately Issued Interpretive Map of the Civil War

78. [MAP]. CASE, O. D. & COMPANY. Map of the Seat of War to Accompany the American Conflict. Hartford: Published by O. D. Case & Co. [lower right above neat line] Entered according to Act of Congress, in the Year 1865 by O. D. Case & Company, in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the United States for the District of Connecticut | Engraved by Oliver J. Stuart, New York and Brooklyn. [inset map at lower left] Map of the Lower Portion of Texas [inset map at lower right] Map of the Lower Portion of Florida. Hartford, 1865. Lithograph map on thin paper, original full hand color, neat line to neat line: 65.5 x 93 cm. Creased where formerly folded, slight wrinkling, a few tiny losses at folds, otherwise very good.

First edition, a map separately issued to accompany Horace Greeley’s The American Conflict (Hartford: Case, 1864-1866; Sabin 28482). The map, however, was not issued with the book and is rarely found with it. This highly detailed map includes the entire Southern area of the Civil War as well as the border areas, such as Kansas, Kentucky, and Missouri. Battlefields are indicated, as are various forts and military structures. The farthest north battlefield shown is, of course, Gettysburg. Various movements of infantry and cavalry are also delineated on the map, although many of them appear to be fragmentary. One campaign indicated, for example, is Sherman’s march to the sea. Another is the troop movements leading up to the Battle of Bentonville, the last large battle of the War east of the Mississippi. Lee’s retreat to Appomattox is shown along with the notation: “Lee surrendered Apl. 9, 1865.” A map noteworthy for its accuracy and detail. ($200-400)

Sold. Hammer: $250.00; Price Realized: $293.75
