283.     [MAP]. COLTON, J[oseph] H[utchins]. Nebraska and Kanzas. Published By J.H. Colton & Co. No. 172 William St. New York. 1856 [above lower left neat line] Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1855 by J.H. Colton & Co. in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York. New York, 1856. Steel-engraved map on bank note paper, wide ornate strap work border, original full hand coloring in yellow and pink, boundaries in bright rose, neat line to neat line: 27.3 x 35.7 cm, map & border: 31.4 x 40.1 cm, overall sheet size: 35 x 43 cm; folded into original dark brown blind-embossed cloth pocket covers (12.9 x 8.8 cm), gilt lettering and blind embossing on upper cover: Kansas and Nebraska; printed broadside with Colton ads on tan paper (Maps, Atlases, Guides, Books, Etc., Published by J.H. Colton & Co….) used as pastedown on inside upper cover. Exceptionally fine, leaving nothing to be desired.

This separately issued pocket map is another fine commercial production from the industrious Colton firm, whose ad on the pastedown touts its 1855-1856 world atlas, where the map appeared in an altered form (Rumsey 149). The present map is another issue of a map with the same name as that found in Moffette’s The Territories of Kansas and Nebraska, New York, 1855 (Plains & Rockies IV:260:1 & Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West #886). The pocket map version, which is the most difficult to obtain, is dated 1856 and of the same dimensions as the map in Moffette, although the coloring is more like that in Colton’s world atlas.

The map presents the High Plains north to Canada and west to the Rockies, including parts of present-day New Mexico, Colorado, the Dakotas, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana (to Maria’s Pass). Located are rivers, creeks, lakes, mountain ranges, forts, towns, cities, Native American habitation, trails, and proposed railroads based on surveys by Gunnison, Stevens, and Beckwith. The map appeared at a pivotal time in the history of the area, when Kansas was still “bleeding” and the slavery question was far from settled.
