Lithograph map in full pastel color, mounted on original linen, neat line to neat line: 61 x 86.5 cm; overall sheet size: 64.8 x 91 cm, folded into original dark brown cloth pocket folder (17.1 x 10.7 cm), lettered in gilt on upper cover: Auglaize Co., Ohio, beige floral endpapers. A few short clean splits at folds (no losses), otherwise map is very fine. Pocket folder has a few spots and one small gouge to cloth.

Unrecorded; OCLC locates no copies, although Ohio State holds a copy of Sutton’s 1886 Oil Map of Allen County, Ohio. Similarly, no copies located using other online resources. Very rare. Among the early maps, if not the first, to focus on the newly-discovered petroleum resources of western Ohio. Sutton also published an atlas for Auglaize County.

The map shows sections in pastel colors with thousands of land parcels on a numbered grid with owner names, oil wells, gas wells, dry wells, and rig locations. The map includes cities, railroad lines, reservoir, rivers, ditches and creeks. The map contains a generalized geologic section of the new oil and gas field prepared by Edward Orton, State Geologist, plus seven logs of producing, abandoned and in-progress wells, and a list of the gas and oil wells in the Finley area.
