Geronimo with Dance Revolver

457.     [PHOTOGRAPHY]. [GERONIMO]. Two images, portrait of Geronimo, and another image purported to be his daughter.

[GERONIMO (sitter)]. IRWIN, William E. (photographer). Portrait of a stony-faced Geronimo attired in fringed buckskin and blanket, impressive Plains-style eagle feather head-dress, holding a Dance Brothers revolver in his cartridge belt, and seated before a haystack. Sepia-toned gelatin silver print. Image area: 13.2 x 10 cm; Sheet: 25.4 x 20.4 cm. N.p., n.d. [later copy print of ca. 1905 cabinet card taken by Irwin, Fort Sill, I.T.]. Image with silver mirroring, otherwise very good. Photographer Irwin (1871-1935) worked in Indian Territory/Oklahoma (1890s-early twentieth century, Arizona 1904-1922), and possibly Texas (early). The revolver Geronimo holds was manufactured by the Dance Brothers from 1862 and 1865 in Columbia, Texas, and at Anderson, Texas, in Grimes County.

[GERONIMO’S DAUGHTER (attributed on verso)]. Unattributed full-length portrait of a beautiful young Native American woman standing next to a large stump; she wears a long patterned skirt, and around her shoulders are a blanket and a long fringed scarf, hair parted at center. Cabinet card (glossy collodion print mounted on card). Image: 14.2 x 9.9 cm; card: 16.5 x 10.9 cm. Pencil note on card verso: “April 13 1896 | Geronimo’s | daughter | Ft Sill.” N.p., n.d. [Fort Sill, 1896, from note on verso)]. A few additional notes and illegible marks in pencil on verso. Image with pattern of light horizontal hairline cracks in collodion layer, light surface wear, and a few small stains, four pinholes in card mount (three affecting margins of print), light wear to card edges, overall fair condition only.
