Binding slightly flecked, a few signatures carelessly opened, otherwise very fine. First edition. Winegarten II, p. 239: “Sketches of 150 well-known women. One of the earliest works on Texas women and a scarce source on the Runaway Scrape.” Biographical sketches include artists (Elizabet Ney, Julia Sinks Robertson, et al.), statesmen’s wives (Margaret Moffette Lea Houston, Mrs. Anson Jones, et al.), ranchers’ wives (most prominently Mrs. Richard King of the King Ranch, “The Uncrowned Queen of the West,” with acknowledgement of her skill in saving the King Ranch from financial ruin), women with experience relating to Native Americans (e.g., Bianca Babb, a survivor captive), authors (Augusta Evans Wilson, Amelia E.
