[2], [1-3] 4-32 pp. (printed in double columns, Spanish text), 29 lithograph plates: pictorial title, pictorial half title, and 27 plates with captions in English, French, and Spanish (3 full-color, remainder on tinted grounds, some of which are duo-tone), 3 with 2 images on one sheet; total: 32 images on 29 leaves. Folio (47 x 33.5 cm), contemporary three-quarter tan sheep over black and tan mottled boards, red leather spine label. Binding worn and scuffed, label rubbed with loss, spine chipped at bottom, hinges barely starting (but strong). Occasional mild foxing and staining to plates (mostly confined to blank margins), otherwise fine. This copy has one added untitled plate, signed at lower right “Lehnert” and showing a vaquero riding and lassoing a cow, with Chapultepec in the distance (see Plate [30] below).

Michael Mathes informed us that the ship-like structure on the side of the mountain is a stone-adobe-plaster series of three levels of sails above a boat. This was built around the end of the seventeenth or early eighteenth century by a group of sailors as an ex-voto in thanks for being saved from a storm en route to New Spain.

When the print was redone (see Castro 5), the image appeared in color with changes, such as the addition of a trolley, police arresting a man, etc. The word “Chains” in the title refers to the boundary posts and draped chains along the promenade of the edge of Zócalo in front of the cathedral.

This is the earliest of four versions of views of the Zócalo that appear in the Castro albums. The view is to the northeast with a bare plaza and troops on parade and the cathedral to the left.

In this initial version the streets and square are filled with people, but in the later version the people have been removed to make room for the trolleys, there are no crowds clamoring to enter the Coliseo, and a train appears in the distant background.

This bird’s-eye view presents the church in the center of the image with the river running toward the artist. A later version presents a close-up of the river and bridge going into the village (see Castro 5).

Among the classic images of the Castro album, this incredibly detailed bird’s-eye views shows a hot-air balloon floating serenely above Mexico City.

The text for this image was written by Niceto de Zamacois, who expanded the article and included a detail of the soldiers in an article in El Museo Universal (Madrid), Vol. I, No. 15 (August 15, 1857), pp. 113-114. Later the date 1855 is added to the title (see Castro 4).

Here the parade ground with soldiers drilling is in the foreground, and a row of buildings is on the left.
