Mexico: Establicimiento Litográfico de Decaen, Portal del Coliseo Viejo, 1855 y 1856. [2], [1-3] 4-37 [1, blank] pp. (printed in double columns, text in Spanish), 38 lithograph plates: pictorial title, pictorial half title, and 36 plates with captions in English, French and Spanish (3 full-color, remainder on tinted grounds, some of which are duo-tone), 4 with 2 images on one sheet; total: 42 images on 38 leaves, plus lithograph map (see below). Folio (45.5 x 32.5 cm), contemporary dark green calf over black and green mottled boards, spine gilt-lettered and gilt-ruled (expertly re-backed, original spine preserved, a skillful job, with matching gilt tooling added at extremities, board coloring refurbished, original endpapers retained). Hinges starting but firmly attached. Text very good except for some very mild browning and a few leaves (16/17 & 28/29) lightly stained at edge (just touching text). La Glorieta plate with old tape repair on lower right verso consolidating a tear, Cathedral of Mexico plate missing upper right corner (supplied in pen facsimile) and with a repaired tear at lower left extending into English caption (no loss), otherwise plates are very fine except for occasional faint marginal staining and very mild foxing. Map very good except lower margin is slightly stained. Most tissue guards present and intact.

First appearance of this image in the collection of Castro albums in this catalogue. At lower right is a large coach escorted by a retinue of soldiers and honor guard. Two bystanders wave their hats at the passing procession. It has been suggested that this might be Santa-Anna, who in 1855 went into exile. In a later version (Castro 6), the carriage and retinue were removed and a military troop of French soldiers (Zouaves) in their unusual red and blue uniforms with baggy trousers was placed in the left foreground to indicate French occupation.
