[4], [1] 2-67 [3],[i] ii-v [1, verso blank] pp. (printed in double columns, text in Spanish and French), 46 lithograph plates: full-color pictorial title on gilt ground, and 44 plates with captions in English, Spanish, and French (41 full-color, remainder on tinted grounds, some of which are duo-tone), 4 with 2 images on one sheet; total: 50 images on 46 leaves, plus two lithograph maps (see below). Folio (46 x 32 cm), new antique style three-quarter maroon calf and contemporary burgundy and brown mottled paper over new boards (original gilt-lettered spine label retained), spine with raised bands, new endpapers, new tissue guards. Text with uniform browning and mild to moderate foxing to title and half-title. Some plates with mild to moderate foxing, mostly confined to margins. Some of the plates have a tiny pinhole at upper right blank corner of image (a pin was often used during the process of making the image to insure stability and maintain perfect registration of colors). This might seem a fault to some eyes, but we believe these unobtrusive pinholes elucidate the methods used for obtaining correct color registration when the prints were created.

Plates

[1]  [Pictorial title] [in image] Mexico y sus alrededores. Coleccion de vistas, trajes y monumentos por C. Castro, J. Campillo, y G. Rodriguez. Publicacion de V. Debray, Editor. Full color with gilt highlights and ground in upper portion of image. 33.7 x 23.8 cm.

Castro del. y lito. | México, Lit. de Debray editor. Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 25.4 x 37.3 cm. In this version the artist adds trolley lines, and the French title is given precedence at the left. This is one of two appearances of the variant in this collection; the other is found in Castro 7.

[3]  The Tlaxpana Fountain, Avenue of San Cosme. | La Fuente de la Tlaxpana, Calzada de San Cosme. | Fontaine de la Tlaxpana, Avenue de Saint Cosmé. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] C. Castro del. y lito. | México Litog. de V. Debray Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23 x 33 cm. This image is completely changed from the original version (see Castro 1). The artist has moved into the street so that the trees appear on the right edge and there is an unobstructed view of the fountain. The two riders who were on the far left in the earlier view are directly in front of the fountain. In the distant background a funeral procession moves from right to left. A small herd of cattle in the road kick up dust, and two woodcutters on the right walk toward the artist.

[4]  Morelos Square, Formerly Guardiola Square. |    Plaza de Morelos, Antigua Plazuela de Guardiola | Place de Morelos, Ancienne Place de Guardiola. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] C. Castro del. y lit. | Lit. de V. Debray México, Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23 x 33.1 cm. Here the image is completely changed from its appearance in Castro 1. First appearance of this image in the collection of Castro albums in this catalogue. A different point of view is presented, and the new statue of Morelos is shown at the center. “On September 30, 1865, the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Morelos, Maximilian presided over the unveiling of a fine marble statue of Morelos in Mexico at the Plazuela of Guardiola” (p. 95 in Lyman L. Johnson, Death, Dismemberment, and Memory: Body Politics in Latin America, University of New Mexico Press, 2004).

[5]  A. Stage Coach Attacked. | Ataque de una Diligencia. | Attaque d’une Diligence. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] M. Serrano dib. C. Castro lit. | México, Litog. de Decaen Editor del Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del Editor. Full color. 23 x 33.1 cm.

[6]  The Fo [sic] Spouting Fountain. | La Fuente del Salto del Agua. | La Fontaine de la Cascade. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] C. Castro del. y lito. | México, Litog. de Decaen y Debray, Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del los editores. Full color. 23.5 x 33.5 cm. This is a completely new image of the fountain in landscape orientation, rather than portrait view in the earlier version (see Castro 1). Here the fountain is no longer the dominant feature and is instead presented as part of a crowded street scene. The image is in full color rather duo-tone.

[7]  Principal Parish Church. | El Sagrario de México. | Paroisse Principale. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] L. Auda del. y C. Castro lito. | México Litog. de Debray Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23.4 x 33.5 cm.

The subject is the same in previous versions, but this is an entirely new plate, in portrait orientation rather than landscape. The emphasis is on the crowds of people in front of Iturbide’s house. The artist is Rodríguez rather than Castro, and Decaen and Debray are both credited as lithographers.

Emphasis is on the individual groups of people and the additions include the introduction of the trolley at front left, two men at lower left tending a fire, man at lower right being subdued by three other men, etc.

[14] [Two images on one sheet, above images] México y sus alrededores. Rodriguez del. y lit. | México Litog. de Debray editor, Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23 x 33.8 cm. First appearance of this image in the collection of Castro albums in this catalogue. A large paper mill was established in Belen in the middle of the nineteenth century. Inclusion of this plate might reflect French influence in the Second Empire. In the night of June 13-14, 1862, a little force of one hundred French Zouaves in the Belen area surprised and routed a Mexican force of between four and five thousand men.

[19] College of Miners. | Colegio de Mineria. | Ecole des Mines. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] C. Castro y G. Rodriguez, del. y lit. | México, Litog. de Decaen, editor, Portal del Coliseo Viejo | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23.4 x 33.4 cm.

Castro, del. y lito. | Lit. de Debray editor, México, Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23.3 x 33.3 cm. This view changes as a result of new modes of transportation. For the earlier view, see Castro 1. In the present image the people have been removed to make room for the two trolleys passing in the foreground and there are no crowds clamoring to get into the Coliseo. A train appears in the distant background. Buildings have been added and removed, and the hinterland is beginning to develop. Artist attribution is to Castro only, rather than Castro and Campillo.

[21] Iturbide Market, Old St. John square. | El Mercado de Iturbide, Antigua plaza de San Juan. | Le Marche d’Iturbide, Ancienne place de Saint Jean. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [29] View of the Valley of Mexico, Taken from the heights of Chapultepec. | El Valle de México. Tomado desde las alturas de Chapultepec. | La Valleé de Mexico, Prise des hauteurs de Chapultepec. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] C. Castro del. lit. | Litog. Debray editor. México, Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23.6 x 35.23 cm. This image is totally redrawn with a different viewpoint and many changes to details (see Castro 1). The artist is now closer to the tower and viewing the valley from the wall between the parade ground and the sculpture garden. The sculpture is now in the foreground and the lakes of the Valley of Mexico are more easily seen. Overall, here we have a dramatic transition to a chromolithograph method which omits the majority of drawn black lines.

Litog. de Debray, México, Portal del Coliseo Viejo. | Propiedad del editor. Full color. 23.3 x 33.5 cm. This is the later version of the view of the entire Zócalo. The image is extensively revised to show the completed garden of the Zócalo, which is filled with trees and fountains. The parade ground is reduced to a much smaller area on the west side.

[32] Garden in the Public Square. | Jardin de la Plaza de Armas. | Jardin de la Place D’Armes. [above image] México y sus alrededores. [below image] C. Castro del. y lit. | México, Litog. de V.      Castro 5. On the title page, the publishers refer to this edition as the second, augmented edition. Almost all the lithographic attributions are altered from “Decaen” to “Decaen y Debray” or “Debray.” More elements of updated transportation are included, reflecting the beginning of modernization of the transportation system in Mexico (one of the plates shows the train station at Puebla, and some plates incorporate streetcars and railroad lines). This album adds fifteen new images, some of which use prior subjects but rework the plate completely. Some of the new or totally reworked lithographs are due to changes to architecture and public spaces ordered by Emperor Maximilian during French occupation (1864-1867). The heavy splendor of French Second Empire architecture was imported into Mexico, and the famous gardens and castle at Chapultepec and other architecture and public properties were beautified by the Emperor. Maximilian was executed, but the Second Empire architectural style he introduced to Mexico remained a force and lives on in Mexico. His choices resulted in many beautiful structures and parks. The fifteen new plates in this album are: [3, The Tlaxpana Fountain], [4, Morelos Square, Formerly Guardiola Square], [6, La Fuente del Salto del Agua], [9, Emperor Iturbide’s House, Now general stages Hotel], [13, The Chains by Moonlight], [18, Belen’s Mill], [25, Chapultepec], [26, Chapultepec Park], [27, El Pueblo de Ixtacalco], [29, View of the Valley of Mexico, Taken from the heights of Chapultepec], [31, Public Square of México], [3, Garden in the Public Square], [43, Cascade de Tizapan], [44, Station de Puebla], and [45, Orizava].

In our catalogue listings of the Castro album, the large map of Mexico appears for the first time in the present album.
