AUCTION 23

1000. BANCROFT, Hubert Howe. The Works. San Francisco: The History Company, 1886-1890. Vols. 1-14, 18-24, and 35-39 only (vol 35 in duplicate). 27 vols. 8vo (23.5 x 17 cm), library rebinding, lightweight blue cloth. Bindings deteriorated, separating from boards, and torn; some hinges broken, spines faded, and other binding defects. St. Regis College ex-library with stamps, and titles and call numbers in ink on spines in a disciplined library hand. Interiors good. A ragged set; for working or reading only, for which St. Regis students and faculty have paved the way. Includes all the volumes for History of Mexico and History of California, however. A true tattered monument to a time when Bancroft was actually revered and used. “Colossal co-operative undertaking; nothing approaching it has ever been attempted in this country” (Howes).

(No reserve)

Sold. Hammer: $50.00; Price Realized: $61.25.
