Rare and beautiful sea chart, from De Zee-atlas ofte water-wereld... by Pieter Goos. Nautical chart showing the coastline of Central America, Peru, Chile, Yucatán, and part of Southern Mexico (Nova Hispania). Oriented with north towards left. Kapp, Central America 14. Phillips, Atlases 5690-39. See Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, IV, p. 197, #39 (citing 1664).

Goos (1615-1675), Amsterdam cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and printseller bought the copper plates for Jacobsz’s mariner’s guide, which he used as the basis for his sea atlas, a classic of its day that came out in many editions and languages. He was among the best known maritime sellers in Amsterdam. His well-made pilot guides and handsome sea atlases reflect a high professional standard, and continued to be issued for twenty-five years. Koeman suggests that Goos’ atlas was intended more for the book-lover than the mariner. See Tooley’s Dictionary of Mapmakers II, p. 188 and Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici IV, pp. 192-219.
