     First edition. A stupendous tour-de-force of cartographic scholarship describing in detail various issues and editions of Philippe Vandermaelen’s atlas, of which the the Belgium Royal Library owns four copies, beautifully and carefully printed in a substantial volume. Part of a continuing series describing the library’s superb map and atlas collection.       The publisher’s advertisement states: “The inventory has 682 pages: more than 60 pages of introduction in which the different editions and variations are reviewed; 55 illustrations; the description of the 400 sheets of the Atlas in all its states with the precise content for each sheet; 280 pages of complete transcript of the never before published lithographed leaflets on the maps before and after self-censorship; 70 pages of charts and tables; more than 80 pages of index that help identify the travellers, explorers, authors, historians, geographers, historical figures, ships, etc., stated in the maps and leaflets.”
