Dorothy Sloan -- Books

HERTZOG CATALOGUE

This catalogue contains over 1,100 items relating to the life and work of master printer Carl Hertzog. The first section of the catalogue (lots 1 through 536) contains works printed, designed, or written by Carl Hertzog. Included are many presentation copies and printer's own copies, along with some special proofs and early design states for books, such as Tom Lea's The King Ranch. The remainder of the catalogue is the library of Carl and Vivian Hertzog, again with many interesting presentation copies. This group, which sheds light on the life, work, and creative processes of Carl Hertzog, are offered en bloc.

  • From the Personal Library of Carl Hertzog

Note: The following books and other materials are from the personal library of Carl and Vivian Hertzog. Some relate to Carl Hertzog's printing and design work, others were gifts from friends and colleagues, and many were simply "reading" books enjoyed and perused by Carl and Vivian. Items 537-1171 (with the exception of Items 992 and 993) will be sold only as a group. We have chosen to proceed this way because we think that these books mean more together, as The Hertzog Library, rather than separately. The Hertzog Library reflects Carl's interests and, at times, his creative and intellectual processes. The Library as a whole is more valuable than the individual parts, but we have placed a price on the entire Library that is fair retail value, with no extra added premium. Some of the books in The Hertzog Library already contained Carl's bookplate, but many did not. In order to be able to identify readily these books as being from The Hertzog Library, we asked David Holman at Wind River Press to create printed facsimiles of one of the several versions of Carl's bookplate. When a book The Hertzog Library did not contain Carl's bookplate, we simply laid in the facsimile bookplate created by David Holman. We leave it to the eventual owner of the Hertzog Library to decide whether or not to tip in these facsimile bookplates. As a precaution, we destroyed the extra facsimile bookplates, to prevent their possibly later falling into someone else's hands and being used to create a false provenance.

The en bloc price for Carl & Vivian Hertzog's library is $30,000.00. The library listing is divided here to keep your download times to a minimum.
