88. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Monthly. 6 (of 12) vols., January, February, April, Aug-October, 1921. Approximately 110 etchings (including wrapper labels), some signed. Various colored inks. Original brown and tan paper wrappers, with etched labels on covers. Some wear and chipping to fragile wraps, but generally fine.

     Limited edition (#8 of 125 signed copies). Weber, p. 53: “In one of the early issues, Wall proudly announced that the monthly was ‘the first all-etched periodical in the history of graphic arts,’ a distinction that actually belonged to Gabriel Wells and his L’Image... Noting that ‘it is a tremendous task for one human machine and not a small strain on the physical and mental equipment...the Etched Monthly will be limited to one year’ and a press run of 125 copies.”     $1,250.00

89. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Monthly. Vol. 1, No. 1. Jan. 1921. New York. 14 etchings (plus cover label and 2 ad leaves), one signed by Wall. Various colored inks. 27.0 x 20.5 cm., heavy wove paper, tissue guards. Original hand-bound dark brown stiff wrappers with etched label on upper cover. Light outer wear, front hinge beginning to split, one leaf creased, otherwise fine. Presentation copy: “To Albert H. Griffith, Esq. A worker, and appreciator of things done with the artistic and beautiful in mind. Bernhardt Wall 6.8.23.” Tipped in at the end is a signed half-tone of an etching of the Alamo. Another ownership inscription in ink on endpaper.

     Limited edition (Etcher’s copy of 125 signed copies).     $175.00

 

90. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Monthly. Vol. 1, No. 1. Jan 1921. New York. 14 etchings (plus cover label and one ad leaf). Various colored inks. 27 x 20 cm. (10-5/8 x 7-7/8 inches), laid paper (ad on wove paper), tissue guards. Original hand-bound beige wrappers, etched label on upper cover. Marginal chipping to fragile wraps, interior very fine. Presentation copy: “To Virginia Lynch Feb 2, 1921 Copy No 29 Bernhardt Wall.”

     Limited edition (#29 of 125 signed copies). Another issue of preceding, variant paper, colored inks and binding.     $175.00

 

91. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Monthly. Vol. 1, No. 2. Feb. 1921. New York. 16 etchings, plus cover label. Various colored inks. 27 x 21.5 cm., wove paper, tissue guards. Original hand-bound brown wrappers with etched label on upper cover. Very fine. Presentation copy: “To Albert H. Griffith Esq. Author’s copy Bernhardt Wall.” Another ownership inscription in ink on endpaper. Without the portrait of Admiral Sigsbee, but with a copy of the Announcement which appeared in the January issue.

Brown paper-covered boards, spine chafed, first tissue guard torn, otherwise very fine. Presentation copy inscribed in pencil on front free endpaper: “To Sheridan Gorton Comrade of ‘98 days with my best wishes Bernhardt Wall 8-23-23” and Wall’s pencil note on preliminary leaf: “Personal-Author’s Copy Bernhardt Wall.”

(10-3/4 x 8 inches), laid paper (ads on wove paper), tissue guards. Original hand-bound beige wrappers with etched label on upper cover. Wrappers a little soiled and worn, but internally a very fine copy.

     Limited edition (#10 of 125 copies). Another issue of preceding, variant paper, colored inks, and binding.     $175.00

 

94. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Monthly. Vol. 1, No. 3. Mar. 1921. New York. 16 etchings, plus cover label and two ad leaves. Mostly brown inks. 27.5 x 20 cm., laid paper (ads on wove paper), tissue guards. Original hand-bound brown wrappers, etched label on upper cover. Wrappers a little soiled and splitting at spine, but internally a very fine copy. With signed gift inscription from Wall’s bookseller, James F. Drake, to Leslie E. Bliss. Wall’s pencil note on front free endpaper: “Copy No. 19 Mar 1921, Bernhardt Wall.” Laid in is a half-tone advertisement issued by Drake for Wall’s Etched Monthly.

(10-7/8 x 8 inches), laid paper (ads on wove paper), tissue guards. Original hand-bound brown wrappers, etched label on upper cover. Wrappers chipped and split at spine, one ad leaf foxed. Presentation copy: “To Mr. Alfred Goldsmith Ap 20–21. Copy No. 4 April 1921. Bernhardt Wall.”

(10-13/16 x 8 inches), heavy wove paper, tissue guards. Original hand-bound dark brown wrappers, etched label on upper. Wrappers chipped and split at spine, interior very fine. Presentation copy: “To Virginia Lynch, old friend and Encourager. Ever Sincerely, Bernhardt Wall 10–15–21.”

Brown paper-covered boards over red cloth, spine worn at extremities, otherwise very fine. Presentation copy inscribed in pencil on front free endpaper: “To Comrade Gorton very truly Bernhardt Wall.”

98. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Quarterly. Vol. 1, No. 2. Apr.-Jun. New York, [1924]. 40 etchings (plus cover label and one ad leaf). Various colored inks. 24.5 x 18 cm., laid paper, tissue guards. Original hand-bound forest green cloth over teal mottled paper-covered boards. A few minor nicks to fragile binding, upper hinge weak, small manuscript ink number on blank margin of one leaf and rear pastedown, otherwise very fine. Presentation copy: “To Mrs. Elizabeth Meeker. Sincerely Bernhardt Wall.” Engraved bookplate of Claude Meeker.

99. WALL, Bernhardt. Wall’s Etched Quarterly. Vol. 1, No. 4. Oct.-Dec., 1922. New Preston, March, 1925. 41 etchings, 16 signed by Wall. Various colored inks. 24.5 x 18 cm., wove paper. Original hand-bound plain grey boards. Plain terracotta d.j. with Wall’s ink manuscript spine label: “1st Proofs Wall’s Etched Quarterly.” D.j. with a few minor nicks. Last few plates foxed, terminal leaf with printer’s device removed.

     Limited edition (Author’s proof copy of 250 signed copies). Two of the etchings are by other artists. One cutout etching (Greetings from Mr. and Mrs. Bernhardt Wall...) is bound in backwards.     $500.00

 

100. WALL, Bernhardt. The Etched Monthly. Vol. 1, Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12 (3, 4, 7, 8, 10 not present). Oct., Nov., 1928; Feb., Mar., Jun., Aug., Sept., 1929. Lime Rock, 1928–31. 110 etchings, plus cover etchings, 13 signed by Wall. Various colored inks. Approximately 21 x 15 cm., sizes vary slightly, various weights of wove paper. Original hand-bound stiff brown wrappers, etchings on upper covers. Waterstaining to a few leaves of No. 5 and a few leaves and wrappers of No. 12 (affecting only blank margins), otherwise very fine.

     Limited edition (250 signed and numbered copies). Mostly copy no. 14; one number designated as “Jane.” Weber, p. 56: “The third phase of Wall’s periodical publications, The Etched Monthly, inaugurated at Lime Rock, Connecticut in 1928, was completed in April of 1931. Smaller in format than the earlier journal, it was priced at $25 per year. Though advertised as being part of a press run of 250 copies, only fifty-five subscribers were identified.” Nine of the etchings are by other artists, including one by the noted Texas artist, Mary Bonner.    $600.00

     Limited edition (#34 of 250 copies). Following Bernhardt Wall, p. 57. Several of the etchings relate to Wall’s neighbor Dard Hunter, and the portrait printed here is on a piece of watermarked Hunter paper, the only such sheet in the book.      $85.00

111. WALL, Bernhardt. The Etcht Miniature Monthly Magazine. [Sierra Madre, January-December 1948]. 12 issues. 388 miniature etchings. Various colored inks. 4.5 x 3.5 cm., wove paper. Each miniature book in Wall’s custom grey cloth board and paper folder with inset to house book and Wall’s etched labels and ink ms. notes on spines. Other than some mild browning to folders and portion of etched label of Vol. 9 absent, fine set. One with Wall’s autograph letter to Natalie laid in (with miniature etching).

     Limited edition (#2 of 60 signed sets). Following Bernhardt Wall, p. 58. In the prospectus for this rare miniature periodical, Wall states: “This magazine is my latest, and mayhap, my last toil in the field of periodical publishing. At my age [75 years] such a venture may seem foolhardy. I hate rest and rust. Hence, I go on. Having eyesight, a pair of healthy hands, and a head full of ideas, and memories of contacts with famous persons, it would be a shame not to utilize this latent material to some good mutual purpose. I contract to issue 12 numbered in 1948. The edition will be limited to 60 numbered & signed subscriptions, which will be my capacity to carry out... The subject matter will be about well-known personages, bits of text, and spots where history was made... Bernhardt Wall, The Etcher of Books.”     $7,500.00

 

112. WALL, Bernhardt. The Etcht Miniature Monthly Magazine. Sierra Madre, August 1948. 34 miniature etchings. Various colored inks. 4.5 x 3 cm. (1-13/16 x 1-1/4 inches), wove paper. Original hand-bound sienna paper wrappers with titles etched on upper wrapper and spine. Preserved in original folding protective case of plain grey boards and paper wrappers with etched label on spine. 16 x 14.5 cm. (6-3/8 x 5-5/8 inches). Very fine. Original case slightly warped and with mild foxing.

     Limited edition (#5 of 60 signed copies).     $400.00
