AUCTION 24

486.

UNITED STATES. ARMY. The Following Tariff of Duties Is Decreed and Announced for the Information of All Concerned. [Veracruz, 1847]. Broadside (24.5 x 19.5 cm) in two columns. Left margin slightly chipped, three small marginal stains, a few tiny holes not affecting text. Overall a fine copy of a rare survival.

First edition. Not in usual Mexican-American War sources.

Concerns tariffs on imports. Supplies meant for the troops are duty free, whereas other goods are admitted at U.S. tariff rates. Scott must have published this shortly after Veracruz surrendered. The loss of import tariffs was a huge financial blow to Mexican finances.
