Signed in print: Posada. 21.5 x 16.2 cm. Same illustration as in Tyler 3 (Nuevos y divertidos versos de un valiente del bajío a sus valedores): "The strong regional traditions in Mexico are represented in the valientecorridos that appeared throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Originating in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish literary forms, these corridos unblushingly boasted of the bravery of men from Guadalajara, Oaxaca, or some other region. 'I am here because I want to see if there is anyone here to equal me,' says the valiente from the Bajío. These bravos have their counterpart in American folk tradition in, for example, the claims of the riverboatman that he was 'half horse, half alligator' and could lick anyone in the house. Simmons comments that the 'humorous treatment of the hero's puerile bravado, with all its burlesque elements, is in reality not too sly satire on a glaring personality trait of the Mexican character.'"
