II. BULLFIGHTER PORTRAIT SERIES

109. Bernardo Gaviño. Undated. Pictorial broadside, quarter sheet, printed on recto and verso, white paper. Lithographic portrait. Unsigned. 8.5 x 5.5 cm. Advertising text on verso for Antigua Imprenta de la Encarnación (text commences: Mexico Grande y variado surtido de colecciones de cuadernitos...). Very fine. From the bullfighter portrait series, attributed to Posada during his early years. Posada was trained as a lithographer, an art he also taught. Upon arrival in Mexico City, he found that publishers were more interested in illustrations that could be printed in the same press run as type. This unsigned series combining lithography and type may represent a transitional phase in Posada's career.
