Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, yellow paper. 2 zinc etchings: (1) Man in sombrero and woman in long skirt with ruffle, low-cut blouse, shawl, and necklace; the couple toasts with wine glasses, surrounded by well-wishers. Unsigned. 7.7 x 11.5 cm. Same image appears in El zapateado o jarabe tapatío.... (2) Urban crowd scene with finely dressed ladies and gentlemen on left and street vendors and peons on right, bandstand in middle. Unsigned. 8.0 x 12.8 cm. 5 minor vignettes. Very fine.

 

127. El descarrilamiento en Temamatla. Cancion popular. 1907. Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, buff paper. 4 type-metal engravings: (1) Man in dark suit, vest, and hat, with one hand raised, addressing a small crowd of people. Unsigned. 8.2 x 11.6 cm. (2) Border illustrating the train wreck with bodies and wrecked train cars. Unsigned. 16.4 x 11.1 cm. (3) Vertical triptych showing people in hospital, people in train station, and man with guitar singing, two smaller figures on either side. Unsigned. 14.6 x 4.3 cm. (4) Nattily dressed thin man in dark suit with goatee standing by a table with cards and money, surrounded by playing card personalities, such as jacks, king, etc. Unsigned. 7.3 x 11.5 cm. Very fine, and complex, interesting composition.

Pictorial leaflet (8 pp.) with verse and prose, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, buff paper. 2 type-metal engravings: (1) Bust portrait of Mary with hands raised in prayer; surrounding wreath of flowers. Unsigned. 4.0 x 4.7 cm. (2) Infant Jesus asleep. Unsigned. 2.6 x 4.4 cm. Very fine.

 

129. El gran descarrilamiento en Temamatla. Corrido popular [No. 32]. 1903. Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, rose paper. 3 zinc etchings: (1) Railroad station scene with man in sombrero talking to a crowd of attentive men and women. Unsigned. 7.5 x 11.5 cm. (2) Crowd scene with injured passengers being carried away and tended. Unsigned . 5.6 x 11.9 cm. Berdecio and Appelbaum 49 (variant): "This major railroad accident, which took many lives, occurred in 1895, but was a subject for broadsides for long afterward. It is still spoken of in Mexico today." (3) Portrait of well-dressed woman with floral border. Unsigned. 16.3 x l0.4 cm. Very fine.

 

130. La noche serena [No. 65]. Undated. Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, fuchsia paper. 2 zinc etchings: (1) Idyllic scene with finely attired lady and gentleman in boat, the man rowing and the lady playing a guitar, water wheel in river, large stone building, trees, and moon in background. Unsigned (attributed to Posada). 15.8 x 11.7 cm. (2) Lively fight between coins that have legs and arms. Unsigned (attributed to Posada). 9.3 x 12.2 cm. Very fine. Tyler 96 (variant): "This print could illustrate any number of monetary crises in Mexico during Posada's working years, but it probably relates to the change from the silver standard to the gold standard in 1905.... Many people suffered a loss in earning and purchasing power as a result of the conversion.... In this print, Posada graphically depicts the silver money, pesetas, being routed by the new money, veintes."

Type-metal engraving entitled: San Expedito. Illustrates the patron saint of difficult negotiations and the protector of youth. Unsigned. 8.1 x 5.7 cm. Very fine.

 

134. Oraculo mignon [title-page to leaflet]. Undated. Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with prose, quarter sheet, printed on recto and verso, buff paper. Zinc etching: A haggish old woman wearing a black skullcap and ornamental robe casts scrolls into a brazier on a table with bottle, cards, mortar and pestle; an owl watches at upper left and a black cat arches at lower left. Signed in print: Posada. 13.0 x 8.7 cm. Very fine. Contains numbered prognostications keyed to the phases of the moon and the days of the week. A tour de force of the etcher's art, with stipple, solid blacks, curled lines, etc. Superb.

 

135. Piadoso triduo dedicado á ntro. Señor Jesucristo bajo la advocacion de El Señor del Veneno...[title-page to leaflet]. Undated. Pictorial leaflet (8 pp.) with verse and prose, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, buff paper. Type-metal engraving: Maria Dolorosa with the crucified Christ. Unsigned. 7.3 x 5.5 cm. Very fine.

 

136. Una platica de amores cual ninguna divertida, entre un zapatero bruja y una gata relamida [title-page to leaflet]. Undated. Pictorial leaflet (8 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, green paper. Type-metal engraving: Bearded man in charro dress embracing a well-endowed woman wearing long skirt, blouse, and apron; behind them is a brick oven with a large steaming pot. Unsigned. Five other related illustrations and small vignette. Blank right margin stained, otherwise fine.

 

137. Los rateros y el Valle Nacional. Undated. Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, bright orange paper. 3 zinc etchings: (1) Scene at railroad station with soldiers guarding forced laborers, men at right, women at left, smokestack on train belching smoke. Unsigned. 8.1 x 12.3 cm. (2) Prison of San Lazaro. 8.5 x 10.4 cm. (3) Dramatic snake with woman's head, trembling man at left saying: "Asi me eneredaste a mi" and another man at right already crushed in the lady/snake's massive coil. Unsigned. 8.5 x 11.7 cm. Very fine.

Pictorial leaflet (4 pp.) with verse, half sheet, printed on recto and verso, buff paper. Zinc etching: Christ on the cross, lettered sign above "INRI", loin cloth with lettering "IHS", radiating nimbus around Christ, vases of flowers on either side. Unsigned. 14.1 x 9.4 cm. Other than small tear at lower right, very fine. One minor vignette.
