THE MONSIGNOR FRANCIS J. WEBER COLLECTION OF BERNHARDT WALL

A.1.34. Following Abraham Lincoln

WALL, Bernhardt. Following Abraham Lincoln, 1809–1865. Lime Rock, [1931-1942]. 86 volumes. 960 etchings, 650 signed by Wall. [952 total, 611 signed - alternate total not counting volume 86]. Various colored inks. 16 x 146 cm. (6-1/4 x 5-5/8 inches), heavy wove paper. Original hand-bound plain grey boards, dust wrappers with etched spine labels; Volume 86 with calligraphic spine label.

Limited edition (#2 of 100 signed sets). Weber, p. 38: "This series, which follows Lincoln from his English ancestry to his tomb in Springfield, Illinois, was begun on May 21, 1931, and ended with October 2nd, 1942. Originally, Mr. Wall envisioned a series of only fifteen volumes, but 'after getting into stride, I found that my hero had done considerable traveling...so the volumes grew and piled up.' In 1940, the etcher felt that the series would stop at Volume 60, so he dedicated the next volume to an index. Then Mr. Wall began what he describd as a 'supplemental series' to present overlooked 'Lincoln contacts' together with 'places in the Old World' associated with Lincoln. Finally, the series was concluded with Volume 85, which included a second, updated index by Harry E. Pratt."

Volume 86 is a special volume prepared for subscriber Henry Horner, with 5 etchings, a tipped-in newspaper article on Wall, and two calligraphic notes by Wall in red and black ink: (1) "THIS SET OF F.A.L IS NUMBER T.W.O. Bernhardt Wall" (2) "The series of FOLLOWING ABRAHAM LINCOLN was begun May 21, 1931; and ended Oct. 2., 1942; 55 sets were issued. the numbers are continued, until 100 are reached. As my age is nigh 79, it stands to reason that but very few sets will be made." Wall's magnum opus, and one of the rarest Lincoln items. 70000001

WALL, Bernhardt. Following Abraham Lincoln, 1809–1865. Lime Rock, [1946]. 534 etchings, 531 signed by Wall + 2 pp. (typescript). Various colored inks. 24 x 22 cm. (9-1/2 x 8-7/16 inches), laid paper. Original hand-bound full red levant morocco gilt, spine gilt with raised bands, inner gilt dentelles. Maroon cloth slipcase. Other wear and abrading to head of spine and moderate rubbing to backstrip, an excellent copy. Color photograph of Wall tipped onto a preliminary leaf. Wall's typed signed foreword to subscribers bound in at front.

Limited edition, large paper issue (#1 of 6 signed copies). In his foreword, Wall states: "In early November of 1942 we moved to California, taking with us a thousand copper plates with etchings thereon... And then our idle hands began assembling the pages of FOLLOWING ABRAHAM LINCOLN into a chronological sequence and readable as any other biography... In 1946 we brought out the 534 pages bound into one volume weighing nearly eleven pounds by the scales. This big volume is one of the biggest tomes on Lincoln." Weber, p. 44: "In 1946, the etcher issued a single chronological volume comprising all or at least most of the etchings that had been issued in eighty-five volumes between 1931 and 1942." This one-volume edition contains three plates which are not present in the preceding 85 parts issue: (1) ANCIENT PARISH IN GREAT YARMOUTH... (1946), (2) Knob Creek, Cabin Home of Young Abe Lincoln... (1940), (3) [Portrait of Lincoln] after Gardner (1947). LINCOLN'S TRIBUTE TO WASHINGTON appears as a single plate in this volume, but as 2 miniature plates mounted within etched frames in the 85 parts issue. The 85 parts issue contains a miniature etching of Washington's bookplate, not in this one-volume edition. 70000085
