THE MONSIGNOR FRANCIS J. WEBER COLLECTION OF BERNHARDT WALL

A.3.1. Wall's Etched Monthly

WALL, Bernhardt. Wall's Etched Monthly. Vols. 1–3. New York, January-December, 1921. 12 numbers in 3 volumes. 199 etchings, 14 signed by Wall. Various colored inks. 26.5 x 18 cm. (10-3/8 x 7 inches), laid Japanese paper. Original hand-bound three-quarter brown levant morocco over brown and purple marbled paper-covered boards, spines with raised bands and gilt lettering, t.e.g.

Limited edition (#72 of 125 signed copies). Weber, p. 53: "In one of the early issues, Wall proudly announced that the monthly was 'the first all-etched periodical in the history of graphic arts,' a distinction that actually belonged to Gabriel Wells and his L'Image... Noting that 'it is a tremendous task for one human machine and not a small strain on the physical and mental equipment...the Etched Monthly will be limited to one year' and a press run of 125 copies. Though issued monthly, indications are that over half of the press run was bound in leather at four-month intervals before reaching subscribers." Eleven of the etchings are by other artists, including J. Duncan Gleason, Sepp Frank, Warren Keith, and Louis Ruyl. 70000034(1–3)
