As will be obvious in reading the descriptions in this catalogue, one name stands out—Gary F.
Kurutz, State Librarian of California, Head of Publications of The Book Club of California, most
excellent scholar, highly respected librarian, and warm friend and colleague who freely shares his
incredible knowledge—both in printed word and on a one-to-one basis—with so many of us eager
to know and understand better California, Western, and Mexican history.
I have freely quoted with permission Gary’s words in his outstanding bibliography
fornia Gold Rush: A Descriptive Bibliography of Books and Pamphlets Covering the Years
(San Francisco: The Book Club of California,
). I also dipped into Gary’s wonderful histori-
cal notes in our own catalogue of the complete collection of first editions assembled by Daniel G.
Volkmann, Jr. Frankly, I see no point in reinventing the wheel or paraphrasing, when Gary’s words
are so superior.
This is not my first bibliographical excursion with Gary, and I hope it is not my last.
Thank you very much, Gary.
