1850 Swedish edition of Bryant, with engraved map and plate

21. BRYANT, Edwin. Californien, en Skildring af Landet, dess Klimat och Guldminor Jemte råd för Utvandrare om de Fördelaktigaste Sätten att Nedsätta sig Derstädes. Utarbetad i Sammandrag efter de Nyaste Autentika Källor. Med en Karta och en Planch. Stockholm: Pä A. Bonniers Förlag, 1850. [2], 203 [1, blank] pp., engraved plate (Guldvaskning i Californien, miner’s panning gold in a stream), engraved map (Kart af Ofre Californien med Guld-District 1850, 14 x 8.5 cm; 5-1/2 x 3-3/4 inches). 12mo, contemporary three quarter tan sheep over black and purple marbled boards, remains of gilt-lettered spine label, marbled edges. Spine moderately worn, corners bumped (some board exposed), offsetting to pages adjacent to plate and map, overall a very good copy of a scarce edition. Title with contemporary blue ink stamp of Albert Kramer, Kalmar.

      Attesting to the value of Bryant’s text, it was republished around the globe, including English, Dutch, French, Swedish, and Belgian editions. Word of Bryant’s book made it to the “land down under” and in 1850 it was published with a Tasmanian imprint. Australian publisher Henry Dowling wrote: “It is believed that this publication will supply the desideratum so much needed in the Australian colonies, to meet the numerous inquiries with reference to the new state of California.” The Australian edition also included Felix Wierzbicki’s California As It Is.
