Total: One engraved folding map (Carte des Antilles 1844), 28 engraved plates (scenes, view, nautical, architecture, Natives). 8vo, original green, blue, and white decorated wrappers, title within ornate white border. Lower outer corner of upper wrap missing (loss of part of border), other light chipping to fragile wraps, a very fine, untrimmed copy. Preserved in a green morocco and green cloth clamshell case.

     First edition. These four volumes in one issued as separate titles in the large Didot series L’Univers: Histoire et Description de tous les Peuples, of which it forms the fifth volume of the American portion. Here the four separate parts are arranged as an omnibus with a general title. Palau 256194. Sabin 68924. Staton & Tremaine 5406. Strathern 458. Wickersham 5779. This volume is devoted to North America and the Antilles. The section on the U.S. contains a brief account of the Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War. The last book is devoted to California, Oregon, and Russian America, with an appendix describing the California gold fields. The engravings are lovely, with subjects such as Cuba, Washington, Virginia, New York, and Canada, the latter of which includes excellent plates of indigenous tribes.
