Kurutz, The California Gold Rush 241:

Fleischmann served as U.S. Consul, sponsored immigration projects, and put together this short pamphlet to gain interest in the potential of California. The majority of the work is a translation of T. Butler King’s March 22, 1850, report on the mines. The consul also added translations of other official reports including Lieutenant Maury’s summary of a proposal to build a railroad linking both coasts. The preface is dated July 1850.
