Lot 153

153. [VOLLMER, Carl Gottfried Wilhelm]. Californien und das Goldfieber. Reisen in dem Wilden Westen Nord-Amerika’s, Leben und Sitten der Goldgräber, Mormonen und Indianer den Gebildeten des Deutschen Volkes Gewidmet von Dr. W. F. A. Zimmermann. Mit 8 Lithochromirten Bildern und 51 in den Text Eingedruckten Abbildungen. Berlin: Verlag von Theodor Thiele, 1863. [8], 744 pp., 8 chromolithograph plates, text illustrations. 8vo, modern olive green cloth, older black leather gilt-lettered spine edges, marbled edges. Except for light browning to title and extremely light scattered foxing, very fine internally, the plates excellent.

First German edition, only preceded by the Swedish edition of 1862 (see previous entry). Cowan I, p. 255. Cowan II, p. 701. Flake 9491. Graff 4496. Howes V140. Kurutz, The California Gold Rush 655b. Wheat, Books of the California Gold Rush 238.

Although copied from the versions that appeared in the first edition, the plates here have captions in German, are on a larger scale, more detailed, and much better executed than their originals. In most cases the coloring is also more vivid and imaginative. Some variances in coloring have been noted in copies of this edition. The frontispiece (Plate [1] in preceding description) in this edition is considerably more dramatic than its original because it has been oriented to portrait rather than landscape mode. The orientation here is better suited to the depiction of the scene of the horses and riders careening off the high cliff. ($250-500)
