Solid Blue Railroad Map with Reverse White Printing

90. [MAP]. COMMERCIAL HERALD & MARKET REVIEW. The Southwestern Railroad System United States and Mexico Supplement to the "Commercial Herald & Market Review" January 1881. Copyrighted 1881. Lith. H. S. Crocker & Co., S.F. [overprinted at lower left] Compliments of "Commercial Herald," San Francisco. Cal. [inset table at lower right giving statistics about western states and territories]. [San Francisco, 1881]. Lithograph map on solid blue ground with reverse white printing, border to border: 56.7 x 86 cm. Creased where formerly folded, some separations at folds, professionally consolidated (small losses), minor edge chipping at lower blank margin. A good example of a fragile and uncommon map. Very striking appearance with the beautiful intense blue and white.

First edition. The map concentrates on the railroad system west of the Mississippi River, showing all major railroads in that area as they had been built at the time. The longest route runs from Boston to Los Angeles. Even a few trunk lines are shown, such as those to Leadville, Colorado; Deadwood, South Dakota; and Wood River, Idaho. Depictions of ships and distances from ports to various foreign locales are also given. Some railroads in northern Mexico are also shown.  ($400-800)
