Pocket Map of Ohio with a Fanciful National Road

109. [MAP]. MITCHELL, S[amuel] Augustus. Map of the States of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois with the Settled Part of Michigan. Published by S. Augustus Mitchell Philadelphia: 1837. Sold by Mitchell & Hinman North 5th St. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1831 by S. Augustus Mitchell in the Clerks office of the eastern district of Pennsylvania. [inset maps, upper right to lower left] [1] Vicinity of Detroit;[2] Vicinity of Cincinnati; [3] Falls of Ohio; [4]) Lead Region East of the Mississippi River. [table at left] Steam Boat Routes. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1837. Engraved map on bank note paper, original full and outline color. Pocket map folded into blind-embossed original black roan covers (13.5 x 8 cm) lettered in gilt on upper cover: Mitchell’s Map of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois & Michigan. With Census table affixed to verso of front cover. Covers lightly rubbed; map professionally backed with archival tissue, some minor losses at folds, a few scattered, light stains, otherwise very good. Several canal routes are lightly marked in red and blue pen, apparently a feature added by a former owner.

Revision of a plate originally from Finley’s New American Atlas, subsequently published and updated in pocket format as here. Rumsey (514) and Ristow (126) list the 1834 pocket map version. Shown on this map are counties, towns, streams and rivers, canals, and roads. Development west has followed the National Road, which is here fancifully shown extending all the way to the Mississippi River, a reality that would never happen since in 1840 Congress refused to appropriate any more money towards its construction. On the other hand, some of the details of the area captured are fascinating, such as the depiction of the tiny community of Mt. Tabor, Indiana, in Monroe County. ($500-1,000)

Sold. Hammer: $500.00; Price Realized: $587.50
