Scarce Virginia Ante-Bellum Pocket Map

Augustus Mitchell. 1835. [left below neat line] Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1834 by S. Augustus Mitchell in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. [lower right below neat line] Sold by Mitchell & Hinman No. 6 North Fifth Street Philadelphia.  [inset at upper left] District of Columbia [at upper right] Principal Stage Routes through Virginia. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1835. Engraved map, original full color, inset map of District of Columbia, neat line to neat line: 32.5 x 38.5 cm. Pocket map folded into original gilt-rolled roan covers (12.5 x 7.5 cm), lettered in gilt on upper cover: Mitchell’s Map of Virginia. Pasted to verso of upper cover is: Virginia Census, 1830. Covers rubbed and scuffed, moderate offsetting and browning to map, a few splits at folds, no losses, generally very good.

            Updated from Mitchell’s map copyrighted in 1834, showing the pre-Civil War configuration of Virginia with the modern state of West Virginia included. Shown are counties, roads, canals, towns, and physical features such as mountains, waterways, and caves. Occasionally an industrial site is also indicated. Slightly off the map, the National Road is shown at its eastern terminus in Cumberland, Maryland, but extending through Wheeling before it enters Ohio. The “University” is indicated at Charlottesville, as is Monticello. A scarce antebellum pocket map rare in commerce. ($500-1,000)
