268.     [MAP]. BEYERLEIN, Sigmund. Neueste Post- u. Eisenbahn Karte der Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-America. [key with symbols at upper left] Bezeichnungen…. [inset at lower right at border, 17.7 x 17 cm.] Oregon, Utah und Californien [another inset to left of preceding, 9.5 x 11.4 cm] Freistaaten von Mit. America. [below neat line centered] Nürmberg, Verlag von Sigmund Beyerlein. Nuremberg, 1861. Lithograph map on heavy paper, original outline color, inset map at lower right with California Gold Region colored gold, border to border: 58.6 x 71 cm; overall sheet size 59 x 71 cm, folded into original black board pocket folder with lettering on front (Amerika 1861) (15 x 12.5 cm), publisher’s printed ad on blue paper on front pastedown: S. Beyerlein in Nürnberg empfiehlt aus seinem Verlag und Kann durch alle Buch- & Kunsthandlungen bezogen werden…; verso of map with publisher’s ad pasted on, commencing: Bei S. Beyerlein in Nürnberg…. Fragile board pocket folder rubbed (especially along edges), reinforcing archival paper tape on verso at folds, a few minor splits (no losses), short stain in the Gulf of Mexico (at East Florida), a bit of minor foxing and mild browning at a few folds, left and right neat lines trimmed (appears to have been trimmed at time of publication). Overall a very good copy of a very rare map.

The first edition came out in 1853 and was extensively reworked; here the inset map Oregon, Utah und Californien has been colored with gold to indicate the California Gold fields and the inset of Middle America has been added. Not in Phillips, Wheat, etc. OCLC locates one copy only, in Germany. The map emphasizes post roads, railroads, and waterways.
