[above neat line at lower left] Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1876 by G.W. & C.B. Colton in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington. New York, 1876. Lithograph map on bank note paper with original pale blue shading, within ornamental border. Neat line to neat line: 39.2 x 59.5 cm (at lower right map extends beyond neat line into ornamental border); border to border: 43 x 64 cm); overall sheet size: 45 x 66 cm. Folded into original pocket folder, original brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettered on upper cover: Colton’s Map of Oregon Washington and Idaho C.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. (14.5 x 9 cm), yellow broadside ad (13.9 x 8.8 cm) used as pastedown inside upper cover: G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co., Publisher of Maps & Atlases. Contemporary pencil ownership signature of Frank E. Taylor at top of broadside. Creased where formerly folded, lightly browned at folds and blank margins, light adhesive stain where joined to upper cover, spine of pocket folder split, corners bumped, and with remains of adhesive on pastedown, which is also slightly waterstained and with a light abrasion resulting in loss of a few letters, overall very good. Matted, framed, and under Plexiglas. Very rare.

     First edition. Phillips, America, p. 644. The map was reissued in 1882 with updates and boundaries marked. This map was intended to promote emigration to the area. Two major railroads are shown, the Northern Pacific and the Oregon Railroad. The map is highly detailed concerning physical features, such as waterways, as well as the locations of towns.
