According to Tooley, draftsman and engraver William Henry Gamble (fl. 1861-1887) prepared maps for S. Augustus Mitchell’s firm beginning in 1861. The Rio Grande Valley extends below the neat line, and the inset of the east end of Galveston Island is contoured to fit around the Big Bend. Shown are counties, territories, parts of New Mexico and Indian Territory, towns, forts, roads, existing railroads, location of Native tribes and reservations, Staked Plains, etc. Texas is presented in its customary late nineteenth-century conformation. Here Greer County (see Handbook of Texas Online) is part of Indian Territory and is still intact, preceding its dismemberment within a few short years.
