380.     [MAP REFERENCE]. LOWERY, Woodbury. The Lowery Collection. A Descriptive List of Maps of the Spanish Possessions within the Present Limits of the United States, 1502-1820…Edited with Notes by Philip Lee Phillips, F.R.G.S. Chief, Division of Maps and Charts. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1912. [2], [i-ii] iii-x, 3-567, [1, blank] pp., frontispiece half-tone portrait of Lowery, color lithograph title with emblematic and cartographic themes by A. Hoen & Co. 8vo (26.1 x 19.2 cm), original burgundy ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Endpapers lightly browned, tissue guard between portrait and lithograph title foxed, half title has a temoigne, otherwise fine and fresh.

First edition. Lowery, an expert on the early Spanish possessions within the United States, formed a distinguished collection of maps relating to them and left it to the Library of Congress, together with the manuscript of this volume. Lowery’s monograph contains descriptions of 750 maps, and many of the entries are annotated to reflect Lowery’s researches, and a large proportion are extensively further annotated by Phillips, so that this catalogue remains a most important reference.

The beautiful color lithograph title is an excellent example of the Hoen firm in the early twentieth century, when it was under the leadership of Adolph G. Hoen. The quality of the Hoen firm over seven-plus decades tended towards high realism, exacting detail, and consummate craftsmanship. The Hoen firm executed many of the maps and plates for government reports on the West.
