371.     [MAP]. WHITE, Charles A. Map of Washington Territory West of the Cascade Mountains. Compiled from Government Surveys by Chas. A. White, C.E. [above and left of title] Engraved, Printed Manufactured and Published by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. No. 172 William St. New York [key at lower center with color code for various features such as roads, Native American reservations, etc.] Explanations. New York: George Woolworth & Charles B. Colton & Company, 1870. Lithograph map on four sheets, original outline and wash coloring, highly ornate grapevine border; neat line to neat line, 155.5 x 112.5 cm; border to border (visible from mat) approximately 163 x 122 cm (mat covers a bit of the border at top); scale: one inch = four miles. Creased where formerly folded. Except for light discoloration at upper center (oval-shaped stain, approximately 15 x 5 cm) where formerly attached to cloth folder (removed by a previous owner), a very fine copy of a large and handsome map. Matted, framed, and under Plexiglas. Not examined outside frame. Very rare.

First edition. Phillips, Maps of America, p. 997. Streeter Sale 3257. According to text on the map, Colton based this early commercial map of Washington Territory on U.S. surveys by Charles A. White. See Tooley’s Dictionary of Mapmakers, revised edition, Vol. IV, p. 380. Some attribute the map to Charles Abiathar White (1826-1910), the U.S. geologist who served as state geologist of Iowa and later participated in U.S. Geological Surveys in the West, but this designation is inconsistent with geologist White’s background and training.

This grand map on a generous scale locates towns, cities, forts, wagon roads, Native American lands and reservations, government reserves, prairies, mountain ranges (major mountains, such as Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker and Mt. Adams), counties, townships, etc. Depths are shown by soundings, and part of Vancouver Island is shown.
