St. Louis [upper right, untitled inset map of the U.S. and most of Mexico showing rail lines and ship routes] [below neat line at lower right] Rand, McNally & Co., Engr’s, Chicago [verso, lower right] 6-24-89 [i.e. June 24, 1889] Poole Bros., Chicago. Form 1…5015. Chicago: Rand McNally, [ca. 1889]. Engraved map with outline color in yellow, neat line to neat line: 52 x 69 cm; folds to 20.2 x 8.9 cm. Recto with timetables and railroad ads, some panels with light green background color. Except for a few minor splits (no losses), very fine, with contemporary purple ink stamp of Max Naumann in Galveston, Texas. Difficult to find in excellent condition, as here.

This is one of the many promotional maps that the Texas & Pacific printed over the years. The main map shows their line from New Orleans to El Paso with a branch line going north near Marshall running to Texarkana, then west to Whitesboro and then south to meet up with the main line at Fort Worth. The inset map shows the relationship of the railroad to the rest of the United States and Mexico. The Texas scenery inset shows a country lane onto which is superimposed a vignette of a city at sunset. The recto contains eleven separate timetables for various legs of trips between certain points and eleven separate ads touting such things as the convenience of the various routes and the equipment, including sleeping car service and the Pullman buffet sleeping car.
