553.     WALL, Bernhardt. The Etched Monthly. Vol. I, Nos. 1-12, October 1928 to September 1929. 12 issues, with 197 etchings printed by hand from color plates (including 12 cover etchings, each of which has a seasonal theme, such as turkey for November, Christmas tree for December, Valentine for February, etc.). Many of the etchings are signed by Wall. Various colored inks, heavy wove paper. 12 vols., 8vo (21 x 15 cm), original hand-bound brown paper wrappers with etchings on each upper cover. An exceptionally fine, complete set (usually found in tattered and chipped wraps). The etchings are uniformly pristine.

Limited edition (#24 of 250 signed and numbered copies, this set being a presentation copy from Wall to Charles Mooney, dated San Antonio, 1929). Weber, p. 56: “The third phase of Wall’s periodical publications, the Etched Monthly, inaugurated at Lime Rock, Connecticut in 1928, was completed in April of 1931. Smaller in format than the earlier journal, it was priced at $25 per year. Though advertised as being part of a press run of 250 copies, only fifty-five subscribers were identified.” A variety of etching techniques are used, including regular etching, dry-point, aquatint, soft-ground, and roulette. Nine of the etchings are by other artists, including one of a charro by noted Texas artist, Mary Bonner, and an airplane and sailing ship by Duncan Gleason. Portraits in these volumes include Walt Whitman, Paul Gauguin, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Dard Hunter, Herbert Hoover, Carl Sandburg, Dorothy Scarborough, Joseph Pennell, Albert Einstein, et al.

In the annals of etching and fine press books, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956), sometimes called “The American William Blake,” is widely acknowledged as a pioneer. See Item 552 preceding herein for more on Wall. The Etched Monthly is an excellent volume in representing the wide range of Wall’s subjects and etching techniques.
