Binding slightly chipped and stained, page 7 wanting lower right corner costing a few letters, uniform light age toning, otherwise a very good copy of a rare directory. Ink ownership inscription of P.J. Flannery of Marysville on contents page and lower pastedown, and a few other of his ink markings (Flannery is listed on pp. 32 and 66 as a shoeseller who apparently lived above his shop).

Multicounty directory [with] general directories, town-by-town of Butte, Colusa, Nevada, Placer, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba counties; business directory of Sacramento, descriptions of the cites and towns. First general directories of Butte and Tehama counties, preceded only by G. Owens’ A General Directory and Business Guide of the Principal Towns in the Upper Country, Embracing a Portion of California, published in 1866—including Chico, Butte County; and Red Bluff, Tehama Countyand Henry G. Langley’s Pacific Coast Business Directory for 1867, 1871-73 and 1876-78. First general directory of Yuba County, preceded by Amy’s Marysville and Yuba County business directory of 1858... Extremely rare. This directory was L.M. McKenney’s attempt to link seven north central California counties, all rural, most agricultural, some mountainous—from Butte and Tehama in the north to Placer in the south. Their population together, two years after its publication, in 1880, was approximately 92,500 according to the U.S. Census.
